Course Learning Outcomes* On completion of the course, students are able to:
1. Define what is meant by structural design, discuss the objectives and
recognise various methods of design.
2. Illustrate how to obtain the permissible stresses for timbers using the
MS544
3. Design timber beams, columns and connectors using MS544
4. Review timber as a structural material, its structural properties,
processes it has to undergo before being used in structural
applications, standard tests and factors that affect timber strengths.
5. Recognise various types of timber connectors.
Transferable Skills Problem solving, critical thinking and design skills
Synopsis of Course Contents Introduction and objectives of structural design. Elastic and limit state
design methods. Derivation of permissible stresses for structural timber.
Design of timber joists and beams. Design of timber struts and columns.
Design of timber connections. Introduction of timber as a structural
materials. Timber defects. Seasoning of timbers. Preservation of timbers.
Standard mechanical tests for timber. Factors that affects timber strengths.
Various types of timber connections.
