             Course Learning Outcomes*               On completion of the course, students are able to:
                                                     1.  Employ  the  Boussinesq  method  (elastic  theory),  methods  using
                                                        tables, graphs and charts to determine the stress distribution in soils
                                                        due to different types of loading.
                                                     2.  Explain the process of consolidation and apply the one-dimensional
                                                        consolidation  theory  to  calculate  the  magnitude  and  rate  of
                                                        consolidation  settlement  of  soil  subjected  to  different  of  types  of
                                                        loading and drainage conditions.
                                                     3.  Explain shear strength models and the shear strength characteristics
                                                        of soils.
                                                     4.  Employ  the  shear  strength  theory  to  determine  shear  strength
                                                        parameters of soils for different types of test conditions.
                                                     5.  Explain the mechanisms of slope failure and factors affecting slope
                                                        instability
                                                     6.  Apply  the  different  methods  of  slope  stability  analysis  to  determine
                                                        the  safety  factor  for  various  soil  and  groundwater  conditions  and
                                                        assess the values of safety factor obtained.

             Synopsis of Course Contents             The  course  covers  the  following  topics:  Stress  distribution  in  soils,
                                                     Boussinesq  method  (elastic  theory),  methods  using  tables,  graphs  and
                                                     charts.  Compressibility  and  consolidation  of  soils,  one-dimensional
                                                     consolidation theory and characteristics, consolidation tests, estimation of
                                                     the  magnitude  and  rate  of  consolidation  settlement.  Shear  strength  of
                                                     soils,  shear  strength  characteristics,  types  of  shear  strength  tests,
                                                     residual shear strength. Slope stability, modes of slope failure, analysis of
                                                     infinite  slope,  analysis  of  circular  failure  surface,  Fellenius or  Swedish
                                                     method, Bishop method, stability charts, non-circular failure surface.
