Museum of Asian Art
Three Civilizations Under One Roof
The Museum of Asian Art was established
in 1954, when the University was endowed
with a 15th century bronze Buddha head
dating from the Chiengsen period. The
growing collection was moved to Kuala
Lumpur from Singapore in 1962, where it was
temporarily housed in a section of the main
library before the current building was
completed in 1980.
The museum has the largest
‘Kendi’ (Asian water vessel)
collection in the world.
Universiti Malaya Art Gallery (UMAG)
Officially launched in
October 2011 by former
Vice Chancellor Tan Sri
Professor Dr. Ghauth
Jasmon, UMAG is located
on the fifth floor of the
Chancellery Building and is
the pride of the University.
Its priceless collection of
paintings can be traced
back to the establishment The self portrait of MF Hussain is the most valuable
painting in the UMAG Collection. The ‘Picasso of
of the Universiti Malaya in India’ used a combination of cubism and classical
Indian style in his works.

Rimba Ilmu
Rimba Ilmu or Forest of
Knowledge is probably the
best kept urban secret in
Kuala Lumpur. Established
in 1974, it is the oldest
university botanic garden
in Malaysia, and at 40
hectares, possibly one of
the largest.
