The Monetary and Financial Economics Chair (TIAC)
BACKGROUND
Bank Negara Malaysia (BNM) announced the establishment of the Tun Ismail Ali Chair in
Monetary and Financial Economics (TIAC) at the University of Malaya, on 28 August 2000,
in recognition of the contribution to the nation by the first Malaysian Governor of BNM, Tun
Ismail Mohamed Ali.
By creating awareness and fostering debate amongst local academia, and members of the
local banking and financial community, via lectures, seminars and workshops, the Tun Ismail
Ali Chair aims to enhance academic excellence in the field of monetary and financial
economics at University of Malaya and the next generation of Malaysian economic
graduates; enhance knowledge and expertise amongst faculty members of local universities;
and improve the understanding of the local banking and financial community in the area of
monetary and financial economics.
BNM has endowed a fund of RM12 million to the University of Malaya for the purpose of
developing the Chair and funding its programmes. As of 31st December 2011, five (5)
distinguished holders of the Chair have completed their term. Since its inception, the TIAC
was held by five distinguished chair holders respectively as listed below:
