THE DEAN’S WELCOME NOTE

Welcome Note to New Undergraduate Students – Faculty of Science, UM

Assalamualaikum, Peace be Upon you.
I welcome all of you to the Faculty of Science (FoS). You are now part of a faculty
with a long and proud history, and a tradition of excellence. I hope that this
journey you are about to take will be inspiring, challenging, and rewarding.
The years ahead will not just be about earning a degree. It will be your first steps
towards a bigger world. We hope that your experiences here will shape your mind,
build lifelong skills, allowing to prosper and contribute to the nation in a rapidly
evolving world.
Our tagline—Educate, Innovate, Impact—is not just a slogan. It is a promise, and
a call to action.

With a vibrant community of scientists, philosophers, and innovators, we will:

Educate –You will be guided by some of the finest minds in Malaysia. Your lecturers and mentors are not only
educators but also active researchers, pushing the boundaries of knowledge. Remember: education is not only
about memorising facts—it is about learning how to think critically, question deeply, and communicate
effectively.

Innovate – Science is dynamic. It is always changing and evolving, and is fuelled by curiosity and creativity. In
your time here, you will have opportunities to experiment, explore, and even fail—because failure is often the
first step to discovery. Whether in a laboratory, the field, or through interdisciplinary projects, we will
encourage you to challenge conventions and develop solutions to real-world problems.

Impact – The knowledge and skills you gain must go beyond the classroom. Science has the power to change
lives, to protect our environment, to shape policy, to drive technological progress, and beyond. We want you
to leave UM not just as graduates, but as leaders and change-makers who contribute meaningfully to society.

Thus, as you start this new chapter, I encourage you to be curious, to collaborate, and to make the most of
every opportunity—whether in lectures, research, student societies, or community outreach. This faculty will
be your home, your support system, and your launchpad.

And finally, welcome once again to the Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya. Together, let us Educate,
Innovate, and Impact—for a better future, for Malaysia, and for the world.
