Faculty of Science Booklet, Session 2019/2020

Assalamualaikum WBT and Greetings.
Welcome to 2019/2020 Academic Session.

I would like to congratulate all of you for being accepted to the Faculty of Science
the most productive faculty in UM. You have made the right choice to be part of us.
The Faculty is made up of 4 departments and 2 institutes, with competitive
undergraduate programmes, and taught by brilliant and dedicated academics.
These departments and institutes are equipped with state-of-the-art facilities so
that students are well exposed to the instruments used in world-class teaching and
research.

Undergraduate years are probably going to be one of the best years if not the best for many of you. You will
quickly discover that your experience at the university is more than just being a student. Beside from attending
lectures and practical labs, organizing study groups, or even dealing with crunch-time during the exam weeks,
you will inadvertently (or not) be involved in social activities and sports organized by your residential colleges
or clubs. These activities will help to widen your network, e.g., make new friends who are not necessarily in
your programme and build your character (teamwork, self-confidence, leadership, responsibility, and
compassion via volunteerism activities). We truly encourage our students to be all rounders, being both
excellent in academics and in extra co-curriculum activities. Striking a balance is important, because we want
you to learn as much as you can and maximize your quality time in UM before you start your career. There are
many facilities that you can make use in UM. You just need to diligently ask and discover.

There will be times when you feel that the world is against you; this is just a state of the mind. Please be
informed that you are never on your own at the Faculty. The academics are all good-listeners and will advise
you accordingly. There are also well-known places you can visit to unwind yourself such as the Museum of
Zoology, Museum Geology and our botanical garden, Rimba Ilmu.
The message is this…Be the best of you, contribute to the university in any way that you can, and remember to
take time to smell the roses.
