                Disability Not a Barrier for a Doctorate




    On   26th   January   2021,   the   Faculty   of   Arts   and   Social
    Sciences   held   a   viva   voce   for   Anthony   Alexander   Ching
    Vee Yee, a PhD candidate who is both deaf and mute. This
    would  be  the  first  time  that  the  FASS  or  the  entire  UM,  has
    ever held a viva voce for such a candidate.

    Throughout  the  two-hour  examination,  the  PhD  candidate
    from   the   Department   of   Anthropology   and   Sociology
    successfully   defended   his   thesis   titled   “The   Construction
    of   Deaf   People's   Identities   through   Intersectionality   in
    Malaysian   Mainstream   Society”.   The   presentation   was
    conducted   in   sign   language   and   was   verbalised   by   Mrs

                                                              defending his thesis
    Hassan    from   the   Disability   Management   Services,
    Universiti Malaya.

    Anthony  is  expected  to  attend  his  convocation  ceremony
    in   2021.   The   Faculty   would   like   to   congratulate   him   on
    completing  the  PhD  programme,  as  well  as  his  supervisor,
    Dr.   Rosila   Bee   Mohd   Hussain,   for   her   unwavering
    guidance.   FASS   will   continue   to   welcome   students   from
    all   walks   of   life   to   pursue   research   they   are   passionate   in
    and  remains  committed  in  providing  the  best  service  and

    The   Department   of   English   of   FASS,   Universiti   Malaya,   The   programme   aims   to   expose   postgraduate   students
