Jabatan Pengajian Asia Tenggara (JPAT), Fakulti Sastera Dan Sains Sosial, Universiti Malaya ditubuhkan pada tahun 1975 selaras
dengan salah satu objektif Deklarasi ASEAN 1967, iaitu mempromosi pengajian Asia Tenggara. JPAT adalah satu-satunya jabatan di
Malaysia yang menawarkan program- program Pengajian Asia Tenggara di peringkat ijazah dasar dan ijazah tinggi.mProgram Sarjana
Muda Sastera Pengajian Asia Tenggara merupakan platform untuk perkembangan pengajaran dan pembelajaran yang memberi
penekanan kepada pengajian keserantauan secara intensif merangkumi bidang politik, ekonomi, budaya, maritim, alam sekitar dan
keselamatan di Asia Tenggara. Berdasarkan pendekatan antara disiplin, pelajar mengambil kursus- kursus teras termasuk satu bahasa
Asia Tenggara. Pelajar tahun akhir perlu menghasilkan satu kertas penyelidikan mengenai salah satu tema berikut: politik, ekonomi,
sosio-budaya, seni persembahan, ASEAN, pembandaran, ekonomi maritim dan isu kontemporari di Asia Tenggara. Kurikulum baharu
program Sarjana Muda Sastera Pengajian Asia Tenggara memberi tumpuan terhadap pengajian keserantauan dalam konteks Matlamat
Pembangunan Mampan (SDG- Sustainable Development Goals) dan melengkapkan pelajar dengan pelbagai kemahiran insaniah yang
penting. Ini dapat menghasilkan graduan yang berupaya mengaplikasi dan mengadaptasi pengetahuan dalam konteks pembangunan
kontemporari regional dan global serta memberi sumbangan yang besar kepada kesejahteraan masyarakat. Graduan Pengajian Asia
Tenggara berkemampuan berkhidmat di sektor awam dan swasta. Kebanyakan graduan JPAT bekerja sebagai pegawai kedutaan,
penasihat ekonomi, pensyarah, pengarang, wartawan, aktivis, penganalisis polisi, penyelidik pasaran, pengurus bank, pegawai kastam
dan imigresen, pegawai sektor awam Malaysia dan penyelidik bersama agensi kerajaan dan badan bukan kerajaan. Alumni tersohor
Jabatan Pengajian Asia Tenggara termasuk Dato’ Jojie Samuel, Duta Malaysia ke Thailand, dan Allahyarham Profesor Dato’ Dr. Shaharil
Talib, sejarawan terkemuka Malaysia.
The Department of Southeast Asian Studies (DSEAS), Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, University Malaya was established in 1975 in
accordance with one of the objectives of the 1967 ASEAN Declaration, namely to promote Southeast Asian studies. DSEAS is the only
department in Malaysia offering undergraduate and postgraduate programes in Southeast Asian studies. The Bachelor of Arts in Southeast
Asian Studies programme is a platform for the development of teaching and learning, emphasizing an intensive study of the region
comprising its politics, economy, culture, maritime, environment and security. Based on an inter- disciplinary approach, students take core
subjects including a Southeast Asian language. Students in the final year of study produce a research paper on any of the following themes:
politics, economy, socio-culture, performing arts, ASEAN, urbanization, maritime economy and contemporary issues in Southeast Asia. The
new curriculum of the Bachelor of Arts in Southeast Asian Studies programme focuses on regional knowledge in the context of the
Sustainable Development Goals (SDG) and the equipping of students with various essential soft skills. This will produce graduates who are
able to apply and adapt knowledge in the context of contemporary regional and global developments as well as make significant
contributions to the wellbeing of society. Graduates of Southeast Asian Studies are employable in the public and private sectors. Most of the
graduates of the department are employed as ambassadorial officers, economic advisors, lecturers, journalists, writers, activists, policy
analysts, market researchers, bankers, officers in the customs and immigration sectors, civil servants and researchers in government as well
as nongovernmental organizations. Among notable alumni of the Department of Southeast Asian Studies include Dato’ Jojie Samuel,
Ambassador of Malaysia to Thailand, and the late Professor Dato’ Dr. Shaharil Talib, eminent historian of Malaysia.
