Candidate with excellent publications may submit their PhD thesis in the format
of published papers. Details of the format are available at
http://www.ips.um.edu.my under the ‗Rules and Regulations‘ tab.
Period of Study

The duration of the programmes depends on the requirements of each
programme. In general, the minimum and maximum periods are:

Master‟s Clinical Master‟s Doctoral

Minimum 2 or 3 semesters 4 years 4 or 5 semesters
Maximum 8 semesters 6 years (Dentistry) 12 semesters

7 years (Medicine)

Registered Candidate

A candidate will be classified as a registered candidate of the University from
his/her initial registration until the award of his/her degree, subject to the
candidate to renew his/her registration every semester.

Legislations and Prescribed Rules

(1) Master‟s Programme

A Master‘s candidate is governed by the University of Malaya (Master‘s
Degree) Rules and Regulations, 2014.

(2) Doctoral Programme

A Doctoral candidate is governed by the University of Malaya (Degree of
Doctor of Philosophy) Rules and Regulations, 2007. In addition to the
above candidate is also governed by the Universities and University
Colleges Act, 1971 Constitution of the University of Malaya, all other
statutes, rules and regulations currently applicable in the University
including the University of Malaya (Discipline of Candidates) Rules 1999.

As a registered candidate of the University of Malaya, he/she is
responsible to be aware of and to abide by the rules and regulations of the
University, the policies and requirements of his/her respective faculty and
the advice contained in this handbook.
