EXERCISE SCIENCE
The development of sports in Malaysia is progressing rapidly. Sports in Malaysia is heading
into a new era and has received tremendous attention with the rise of world class athletes
and individuals opting for sports as a career. Hence, athletes and local coaches have to be
exposed to current technological trends in sports as well as apply a scientific and systematic
training program. Practitioners or professional sports scientists must possess a high level of
knowledge in different disciplines related to Sports Science so that they are able to apply the
theoretical considerations and practical aspects effectively. This can only be achieved with a
formal education at college or university level. As we are aware Universiti Malaya is the
pioneer university in this program in Malaysia and also in Asia. There are now 1,000
graduates who have successfully undergone this programme since 1999. These graduates
now play leadership roles in this area in order to enhance the performance of sports in
Malaysia and produce world class athletes.
The Exercise Science program is a discipline in Sports Science knowledge. In general, this
program is divided into two key areas:
(i) A professional career where there is an abundance of career opportunities in Sports
and Exercise.
(ii) An academic area which is specific to preparing intellectuals in higher institutions at
learning and college.
The Exercise Science area as an academic program was initiated some 70 years ago and has
placed the initiating countries in the forefront of sports globally and commercially. Malaysia,
too decided to venture into this area by initiating an academic program in Sports Science in
1995, ahead of most countries in this region. It is appropriate that Universiti Malaya has
produced graduates in the Sports Science area in the hope to continue to provide
leadership and expertise in the areas of sports and exercise in Malaysia.
By learning various aspects of Exercise Science such as Exercise Physiology,
Biomechanics, Sports Nutrition, Sports Psychology, Coaching, Motor Control and Learning,
graduates of Universiti Malaya will possess a well develop knowledge to adapt to changes.
The Faculty of Sports & Exercise Science, Universiti Malaya is continuously enhancing the
quality of the Exercise Science program so that the graduates will be able to meet the
demands of the industry.
