to the establishment of the King Edward VII
Medical College in 1905, and subsequently
after the establishment of the University of
Malaya in Singapore in 1949. The campus in
Kuala Lumpur was mooted as early as 1954,
and a few programmes were started in 1957.
Nonetheless, the actual commencement of
the campus had only begun in 1959, with
the launching of the Faculty of Arts by the
first Yang Di-Pertuan Agong, His Majesty
Almarhum Tuanku Abdul Rahman Ibni
Almarhum Tuanku Muhammad on 18 June
1959. Since then, the Faculty has developed

Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences, expanding from its humble beginnings as a
University of Malaya. The year marked the Faculty of Arts then, to becoming the Faculty
60th Anniversary of the establishment of the of Arts and Social Sciences, transcending
Faculty, nestled amidst the lush greenery and the borders and fields of the Arts and Social
tranquillity of the Pantai Valley, Kuala Lumpur Sciences through the introduction of more
Campus. The University itself traces its origins social sciences programmes.
