                 About The department

           Geography became an academic subject at the tertiary level
           Malaya  in  1928  when  the  Raffles  College  was  established  in
           Singapore.  21  years  later  it  became  Universiti  Malaya.  After
           the  Federation  of  Malaya  became  independent  in  1957,  a
           school  was  established  in  1959  Kuala  Lumpur.  At  that  time,
           the  Department  of  Geography  only  had  5  academics  and
           general staff.

           The  programs  that  we  reflect  the  multidisciplinary  nature  of
           Geography.  At  the  Bachelor  and  Postgraduate  levels,  students
           have  the  opportunity  to  study  various  types  of  sub-specialties
           including  Social  Geography,  Physical  Geography,  Urban
           Geography,   Political   Geography,   Economic   Geography,
           Transportation   Geography,   Natural   Disaster   Geography,
           Biogeography,  Geographic  Information  Systems,  Remote
           Sensing,  and  other  courses  related  to  the  discipline  of
           Geography. Through the new application of curriculum values in
           the  Department  of  Geography  programs,  it  opens  new
           opportunity  exposing  the  students  about  new  programs  that
           train their proficiencies in using new technologies in education
           and  research  field,  industrial  training,  student  exchange
           programs  and  so  on,  to  improve  the  market  value  and
           competitive edge of the students preparing for the career world.

           Distinguished alumni from the department, YBhg. Prof. Dato' Dr.
           Ghazali  bin  Dato'  Mohd.  Yusoff  the  Executive  Chairman  and
           Managing  Director  of  Nusantara  Technologies  Sdn.  Bhd.  YBhg.
           Prof. Madya Ts. Dr. Ramzah Dambul, who is currently the Deputy
           Vice-Chancellor (Research and Innovation) of Universiti Malaysia
           Sabah  (UMS).  YBhg.  Professor  Dr.  Mohd  Rafi  Bin  Yaacob  the
           Deputy  Vice-Chancellor,  Academic  &  International,  Universiti
           Malaysia Kelantan (UMK) and YBhg. Tan Sri Datuk Hajah Norliza
           Rofli  the  former  Director-General  of  the  National  Culture  and
           Arts Department, Ministry of Tourism and Culture Malaysia.
