BACHELOR OF SPORTS MANAGEMENT 2022/2023 ACADEMIC SESSION
BACHELOR OF SPORTS MANAGEMENT
Sports Management is a branch of Sports Science knowledge. In general, it is divided into
1
three main forms (Parks & Quarterman, 2000) :
(i) Professional career fields related to sports.
(ii) The field of professional career where many job opportunities related to sports are
available.
(ii) The field of academic study that specifically prepares intellectuals at universities and
colleges.
Sports Management as an academic field began in the United States around 50 years ago
where it was able to put the country on the world map in terms of globalization and
commercialization within the sports industry. Our country has also made great strides in this
field by introducing Sports Science academic programmes in 1995, making us one of the
earliest institutions in the region to do so. Since then, the Universiti Malaya has been producing
Sports Management graduates who are able to contribute to the development of Sports
Management in Malaysia.
By studying various aspects of Sports Management such as Facilities and Equipment
Management, Sports Finance, Sports Marketing, Event Management, Human Resource
Management as well as Sports Law and other subjects, Universiti Malaya graduates will have
strong and adequate knowledge to make a difference. The Faculty of Sports & Exercise
Science, Universiti Malaya will strive further to improve the quality of the Sports Management
programme in order for future graduates to become even more professional and
knowledgeable.
PROGRAMME OBJECTIVES
The main objective of this programme is to produce high quality human capital in Sports
Management. The graduates who are directly or indirectly involved in this field will be able to
generate ideas, bring positive change and develop the discipline through prudent
management; initiate strong networking and develop sound decision making skills.
This student-centred programme will allow students to follow an interdisciplinary programme
in line with the national sports development agenda. The programme is also designed to
provide students with the know-how, knowledge and skills to be a competent sports manager.
Part of the learning process is for students to demonstrate the ability to perform basic research
in the field of sports. Academic training as such is expected to strengthen and develop
students' leadership in Sports Science knowledge where they will be able to use the latest
scientific theories and models to benefit our local sports entities and communities. This will
eventually create interest and encourage students to engage in lifelong learning.
As a result, students will be able to critically evaluate local and international sports issues, as
well as display professional social skills, perceptions, opinions and attitudes in the
management of sports organizations. In addition, the programme is designed to emphasise
upgrading managerial and entrepreneurship skills in order for graduates to remain relevant in
the sports industry. These objectives can also be achieved by sending the students for
industrial training.
