Department Civil Engineering
Programme Bachelor of Engineering (Civil)
Course Code* KAEA4219
Course Title* Prestressed Concrete Design
Course Pre-requisite(s)/ Minimum KAEA2217 and KAEA2223
Requirement(s)
Student Learning Time (SLT)* 122 hours
Credit* 3
Course Learning Outcomes* At the end of the course, students are able to:
1. Identify the main and important design aspects and requirements for
prestressed concrete.
2. Apply the principles of structural mechanics to compute suitable
prestressing force and eccentricity for design of simply supported
flexural members
3. Employ the concepts of kern of section and pressure line to
determine a suitable cable profile
4. Recognize the influence of prestress losses and calculate its effects
on the design.
5. Evaluate the ultimate strength of prestressed sections and employ it
as a design check.
6. Synthesize all the components of flexural prestressed member design
to prepare and produce a complete set of calculations and working
Transferable Skills Problem solving, critical thinking and design skills
Synopsis of Course Contents Prestressing concepts, structural applications. Material requirements,
