Learning Outcomes By the end of this course, students are able to:
1. Explain the basic concepts of control engineering and their applications
in modern control systems
2. Represent state-space conditions in the form of space-output equations
and block diagrams.
3. Convert transfer functions to state-space conditions and vice versa, and
simple linear equations.
4. Apply the classical method (not Laplace) to solve time domain problems
and state-space equations
5. Produce block diagrams on the flow of signal from the given transfer
function and state-space equations
6. Explain the concepts of stability from the perspective of state-space
conditions.
7. Analyze errors in state-space systems
8. Design state-space controller and observers.
9. Design servo systems, regulator systems with observers, control
systems with observers and optimum regulator systems
Transferable Skills Critical thinking and problem solving skills
Life long learning and information management
Synopsis of Course Contents This course introduces students to the fundamental theories and application
of the theories in control engineering. The main objective is to enable
students to analyze and design control systems in the frequency domain.
Students will be faniliar with the analysis methods and will be exposed to
using the computer for analyzing and designing control systems.
Method of Delivery (lecture, tutorial, work- Lecture, Tutorial
shop, etc)
Assessment Methods Continuous assessment :40%
(Assignments and Tests)
Final Examination :60%
Methodologies for Feedback on Perfor- Marks for continuous assessment and final course grades will be posted on
mance the student notice board. Comments will be given in the assignments sub-
mitted by the students.
