LIBRARY AND OTHER FACILITIES
The University of Malaya Library established since 1962 in Kuala Lumpur is a network of 17 Libraries, fully computerized and
integrated in its operation and services. The Built Environment Library is one of the special subject libraries in the University of
Malaya Library network. Prior to 2003, the collections were kept in the Engineering Library, at the Faculty of Engineering. At the
present location, the Built Environment Library is conveniently located for access and is open to all students during office hours.
The library is manned by two full-time staff members and covers a floor space of about 300 sq. meters with seating capacity for
120 students.
The Library’s core function is to support the learning, teaching and research needs of undergraduate, postgraduate students, and
the academic staff and researchers of the Faculty of Built Environment. However, it is also opened to other registered users of
the University of Malaya Library network, subject to some limitation in borrowings.
The collection gives priority on the learning and teaching programme of the Built Environment Faculty especially in the areas of
architecture, estate management, quantity surveying, building surveying and urban planning. The library materials include both
primary and secondary sources, such as books, journals, reference books, dissertation and theses, conference proceedings and
electronic resources. The library online catalogue, known as Pendeta WebPAC is a union catalogue of the University of Malaya
Library network which provides access to holdings of collection of materials and can be accessed by others via the Internet.
Library Collections
General
The Library has a general collection of about 6,000 volumes on the open stacks. This collection consists mainly of texts,
reference books, and handbooks.
Dissertations, Theses and Academic Exercises
This ever expanding collection consists of works produced by undergraduate and postgraduate students of the Faculty.
Conference Papers
Papers presented by the academic staff at the seminars or conferences especially held in Malaysia are continually collected and
indexed in an index database known as iMalaysiana.
Local Newspapers
Daily Malaysia’s local newspapers such as Utusan Malaysia, Berita Harian, New Straits Times, Malay Mail and The Star are
subscribed.
Journal and Online databases
The Library subscribes to printed journals and online databases, mostly full text journals, which can be accessed via the campus
network and remote access from individual home of registered users.
Some available online databases related to the built environment are ICONDA (International Construction Database), IEEE
Xplore, ProQuest Digital Dissertations, INFOTRAC Expanded Academic ASAP International, Science Direct, Springer Link,
ENGnetBASE: Engineering Handbooks Online, to name a few.
