Department Overview
The Department of Economics was established in July 2005 following the merger of two (2)
departments, Analytical Economics and Applied Economics. It is now the largest department
in the Faculty with 17 academic staffs, with one professor and four (4) associate professors.
The Department is committed to providing comprehensive education in economics and
enhancing research in the field based on theory and application. At the undergraduate level,
teaching covers the core areas of microeconomics and macroeconomics and courses in four
(4) tracks of specialization, that is Monetary and Financial Economics; International
Economics; Labour Economics and Resource Economics.
The Master of Economics programme is designed for those aspiring to hold positions
requiring analyses and a high level of economic proficiency in business, industry and
government. The programme aims to provide its graduates with broad knowledge in a wide
range of areas in economics including development economics, financial economics,
industrial organization, international finance, trade, monetary economics, public finance,
Islamic banking and finance, environmental economics, macroeconomics modeling and
econometrics. Students are also trained to conduct research to enhance their report writing
and problem solving skills in areas related to economics necessary for them to be effective
economic analysts.
