Message from the Head of Department

Dr. Ng SorTho

The year 2016 was a very special year for the department. Three (3) colleagues left the

department and two (2) Skim Latihan Akademik IPTA (SLAI) fellows joined the department
after completing their PhD. Prof. Dr. Idris Jajri, Senior Research Fellow, retired on 23

February 2016, after serving the department for 39 years. The untimely demise of Prof. Dr.

Susila Munisamy@Doraisamy on 26 May 2016 is a great loss to the department and Faculty.
Ms. Noor Ismawati Mohd Jaafar left the department in December 2016 to concentrate on her

PhD. Dr. Lai Siow Li and Dr. Ng Yin Mei joined the department in September and
December respectively after completing their PhD.

The Department of Applied Statistics is committeed to provide training and conduct research

in applied statistics in various fields. The use of appropriate statistical methods is important

in research, problem solving and decision-making. Our programmes equip students for their
careers in business, academia, civil service, corporate sector, financial services and research.

The academic staff have diverse specialization and research interest. They are engaged in a

wide range of research and provide consultancy services to both government agencise and the
corporate sector. The academic staff also have strong links with local and international

organizations such as the Central Bank, Economic Planning Unit, Department of Statistics

Malaysia, National Population and Family Development Board Malaysia, and United Nations
Population Fund.
