Department Overview
The Department of Applied Statistics aims to provide training and research in applied
statistics for decision-making and problem solving in various fields. Our goal is to produce
graduates with critical and analytical skills.
The department currently has three (3) Professors, one Associate Professor, six (6) senior
lecturers, one lecturer, one senior research fellow, one research fellow and one Skim Latihan
Akademik IPTA (SLAI) fellow. The areas of expertise of staff members include applied
statistics, econometrics, financial time series analysis, macroeconomics, biostatistics,
statistical data analysis, quality control, experimental design, operational
research/management science, demography, survey research and sampling, social
gerontology, and actuarial statistics.
At the undergraduate level, the department offers core quantitatives courses in statistics,
quantitative analysis, econometrics and a number of advanced courses under the Applied
Statistics track. At the postgraduate level, the department offers the more specialized Master
of Applied Statistics (by course work) and PhD by dissertation. The annual intake for the
Master programme is about 50-60 students per academic year.
Members of the department conduct research in their areas of expertise. Results of their
research are published in local and international journals, and in book chapters. Staff
members also provide consultancy services to government agencies, NGOs and the corporate
sector.
