Faculty of Economics and Administration

Faculty of Economics and Administration (FEA) was
founded in May 1966, seven (7) years after its

establishment as the Department of Economics within the

Faculty of Arts, University of Malaya. Headed by Royal
Professor Ungku Aziz, FEA was pioneered by three (3)

               academic staff and 14 students.

FEA started with seven (7) divisions that were later upgraded in 1997 to five (5) departments
comprising the Department of Analytical Economics, Department of Applied Economics,

Department of Development Studies, Department of Administrative Studies and Politics, and

Department of Applied Statistics. In July 2005, the Department of Analytical Economics and
Department of Applied Economics were merged into one department known as the

               Department of Economics.

Drawing the strength of these four (4) departments, FEA currently offers the Bachelor of

Economics degree, and four (4) programmes at the postgraduate level namely the Master of
Economics, Master of Public Administration, Master of Applied Statistics and Doctor of

Philosophy. Current student enrolment of FEA is 1,076 students of which 633 are enrolled in
the undergraduate programme while the rest are postgraduate students, including 99

international students from various countries. FEA is proud to have produced thousands of
graduates. Many of them have made their mark in politics and administration, industry and

               trade and academia.

FEA is intensively engaged in enhancing academic excellence specifically, among others, in

the fields of monetary and financial economics, poverty and development, and old-age
protection and social security. In August 2000 the Tun Ismail Ali Chair in Monetary and

Financial Economics was set up with an endowment fund from Bank Negara Malaysia. The

chair, which is currently held by its fifth holder Professor Ajit Singh from the University of
Cambridge, conducts its activities through the Tun Ismail Ali Chair Unit located at FEA.
