FACULTY OF LANGUAGES AND LINGUISTICS AT A GLANCE
The Faculty of Languages and Linguistics, University Malaya, was established on 9 March
1972. It was first set up as a Language Centre and was responsible for conducting language
courses relevant to the needs of the Faculties, Academies and other Centres of the university.
On 27 April 1996 the Faculty began to offer courses for its undergraduate programme, the
Bachelor of Languages and Linguistics. The first intake of 145 students was achieved in
1998/99 session. Currently ten language specialisations are available namely Arabic, Chinese,
Tamil, English, Italian, Japanese, German, French, Spanish and German with Education.
The Faculty also offers postgraduate programmes for Ph.D., Masters of English as a Second
Language and Masters of Linguistics. The Masters programmes are offered as coursework with
a dissertation component.
The Faculty of Languages and Linguistics provides the following facilities:
