INTRODUCTION TO DEPARTMENT OF CHEMISTRY
The Department of Chemistry commenced operations in the
academic year 1959/1960 and stands as one the Faculty’s oldest
departments. Notably, it holds the distinction of being the first institution of
higher learning in Malaysia to receive the esteemed accreditation from the
Royal Society of Chemistry, UK, for its BSc (Chemistry) and BSc (Applied
Chemistry) programs since August 2012.
A core objective of the Department is to establish itself as a center of
excellence in chemical education and research in Malaysia. To achieve this,
students undergo comprehensive training that fosters critical, creative, and
innovative thinking. The Department takes pride in producing highly
esteemed graduates who are in high demand in the workforce.
Currently, the Department boasts a team of 59 academic staff (local
and international), and is honoured to have 1 Emeritus Professor among its
ranks. They teach both undergraduate and postgraduate degree courses as
well as conducting top-quality research in both fundamental and applied
chemistry. While their individual research interests may vary, they share a
common philosophy in tackling chemical-related issues and advancing
expertise in the field of chemistry.
Aside from the undergraduate program, the Department also offers
MSc (research and coursework) and PhD (research) programs. Over the
years, the Department has produced numerous MSc and PhD graduates who
have assumed prominent positions in governmental and private
organisations, both locally and internationally.
