RESEARCH AREAS
Notable research areas in the Department includes: Natural Products and
Medicinal Chemistry, Polymers and Composite Materials, Organometallics,
Environmental Chemistry, Trace Metal Analysis, Organic Reactions and
Syntheses, Colloidal Science, Glycolipids, Catalysis, Computational
Chemistry, Electrochemistry, Kinetics and Mechanisms, Oleochemistry, and
Ionic Liquids.
These various research areas have generated many significant findings
which are published in international journals. We are especially pleased that
our department has contributed one of the highest number of publications for
the University of Malaya. This achievement truly reflects the dynamic
research ambience of the Department in keeping with making it an important
research hub for the nation.
The Department’s research is supported by state-of-the-art facilities which
are maintained by the Chemistry Department Central Facility (CenFac,
http://cenfac.um.edu.my/). These instrumental facilities include: high-field
nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR), mass spectrometers (LC-QTOF-MS,
GCMS, TGA-GC-MS), X-ray diffraction (single crystal and powder),
chromatography (HPLC, GC), elemental analyzers (CHNS, AAS), thermal
analyzers (TGA, DSC), scanning electron microscopy (FESEM), and various
electro-analytical instruments.
JOB OPPORTUNITIES
The Department provides courses that are aligned with the current demands
of the job market, catering to opportunities for career advancement. Our
chemistry program has received professional recognition from the Malaysian
Institute of Chemistry, and our chemistry graduates consistently make valuable
contributions to both public and private sectors. Various fields offer numerous
job opportunities for our graduates. They have the option to engage in
fundamental research and development within esteemed research institutions
such as FRIM, SIRIM, MARDI, Sime Darby, Continental, Petronas, Top Glove,
MPOB, Duopharma, Hartalega, Kotra pharma and IMR. Alternatively, they can
pursue careers in education and find employment as teachers in schools,
colleges, and universities. Furthermore, our graduates have the opportunity to
explore diverse career pathways in the chemical and manufacturing industries,
oil and gas sectors, petrochemicals, energy and fuel industries, polymer and
materials, electronics, sales, and marketing. Additionally, they can venture into
emerging areas of green and sustainable technologies, where new
opportunities for growth and impact abound.
