Message from the Dean
Welcome all, to our very first edition of the Faculty of Science Newsletter, “Science@UM365”. The
faculty is proud to announce this rebranding of our newsletter which will target a wide range of audience
such as the stakeholders, academics, alumni, industry and the community. Science@UM365 will publish 4
volumes starting from the year 2021 in a digital interactive format and will feature an e-ISSN number. The
objectives of this newsletter are to share information from the faculty, highlight events, showcase talents,
and engage with alumni and the industry. With our digital newsletter format, we are able to track and
analyse the number of readers and time spent on each article so that we can continuously publish
newsletters that are relevant and impactful.
In these challenging times, our faculty remains steadfast in providing the best opportunity for
students and academics to excel in scholarly activities. Within this newsletter, we highlight a special section
on teaching and learning in the Covid-19 era, featuring opinion articles from faculty members, current
status on research, publication and future direction. We are also proud to feature our key finding of 2020
on the discovery of the Stegodon, the first-of-its-kind fossil discovery in Malaysia by Dr Ros Fatihah
Muhammad from the department of Geology.
The faculty has been actively engaging with alumni and industry partners throughout the year.
Here we have selected exceptional alumni that contribute to science and society, making a real-world
difference and providing solutions. We are immensely proud of our alumni and it gives us the motivation to
produce more of such individuals in the future. In this volume, we also highlight the success story of a
biotechnology company, which started with an idea, overcame a mountain of challenges and is standing tall
in the ever-growing biotechnology industry in Malaysia.
In our events section, you will find the most interesting activities that were carried out by the
departments and institutes in the year 2020. Do not miss our international and student mobility programs
and see what our academics and students were up to. Besides that, you will find interesting features on our
retired academic staff and industry partners.
On behalf of the Faculty of Science, Universiti Malaya, I invite you to explore this interactive digital
newsletter which highlights the accomplishment of our students, academics, alumni and industry partners.
I would like to also thank the Newsletter organising team and editors for their contribution to our first
newsletter. Stay safe and may we all overcome this Covid-19 pandemic together.
