(a) Candidate has not attended at least one semester of study;
(b) When the examination period has commenced; or
(c) During the final semester of candidature.

Lapse in Candidature

Candidate whose candidature have lapsed due to his/her failure to renew the
candidature, may submit an appeal using the prescribed form to continue with
his/her studies. The approval to reactivate the candidature may only be given if
the lapsed period of candidature is not more than two semesters at any one time,
provided that the candidate is within the maximum period of study. A candidate
whose appeal is approved will be imposed a fine of RM300 to reactivate his/her
candidature.

Change of Title/Field of Research

Candidate may change his/her title of research at any time during his/her
candidature by submitting an application to the Faculty. However, the title of
research is finalized and approved by the Faculty meeting before the candidate
submits his/her thesis or dissertation for examination. A candidate may submit
an application in accordance with the prescribed procedures to change the field of
research. Any change of title or field of study is subject to the approval of the
Faculty concerned.

Change of Supervisor/Department

Candidate may submit an application, in accordance with the prescribed
procedures, to change his/her supervisor(s) or department. Any change of
supervisor(s) or department is subject to the approval of the Faculty concerned.

Extension of Period of Candidature

An appeal to extend the maximum period of candidature must be submitted in
the final semester before the end of the candidature period. Candidate can apply
by filling in the form that can be downloaded from IGS website at
http://www.ips.um.edu.my under ‘Current Students’ tab> Home>Download Forms.

Candidate who is following research programmes is required to get the support
of the supervisor(s) and candidate who is following coursework programme is
required to get the support of the Deputy Dean of Higher Degree before
submitting the form for recommendation of the Dean of the faculty and approval
by the Dean of the Institute of Graduate Studies (IGS).

Approval for a one semester extension can be given not more than twice. Upon
approval, candidate is required to register within one month from the approval
date. Any further appeal will not be considered after the extension of two
semesters has been given.
