Leading with Purpose
Messages of the Vice Chancellor SELECTED SPEECHES AND ADDRESSES
8. Here too, UM and NUS must not stand at the margins. We must lead in providing
thought leadership that grounds the world in evidence and foresight in creating
the needed solutions.
9. From energy transitions to regional health security, UM and NUS must be the
global leaders of thought. This is where the Symposium earlier this morning on
Precision Heath reflects just that. I enjoyed the enriching exchange of expertise
and foresight.
10. Now, some may wonder: why place such weight on a golf tournament? Allow me
to offer a reflection. Golf is not only a sport, but a metaphor for leadership and
foresight. Every golfer knows that a successful game requires more than strength.
It demands patience, strategic anticipation, and the humility to adapt when the
course is not in your favour.
11. In many ways, this mirrors the mission of our universities. And just as in golf,
where one bad swing does not define the whole game, setbacks must not deter
us from the larger pursuit of impact.
12. With this, we have compiled our shared legacy and history into a remarkable
special commemoration book that we have prepared for all of you and to be
presented specially to His Royal Highness Tuanku Canselor and H.E Mr Tharman.
Ladies and gentlemen,
13. This year we celebrate 120 years of shared history between UM and NUS, and
the 60 anniversary of the diplomatic ties between both countries. This is not only
th
a moment for reflection, but for vision. Our existing solid partnerships in academic
and research, especially the field of medicine and health, will remain our beacon
of hope for the future, a testament of our enduring friendship and brotherhood as
190 the hallmark of national strength for both countries over decades.
14. This reinforces our commitment to enduring bond, innovation, and trust. Just as
we look back today at 120 years of history, let us imagine the immediate future
where new breakthroughs in our joint research and academic partnership will
renew the faith of humanity and create a new dawn of hope for mankind.
15. This will be our pledge: to create a future that addresses humanity’s boldest
challenges, where our students lead with wisdom and integrity, and where
Malaysia and Singapore stand together as beacons of stability, progress, and
human dignity.
16. Let us ensure that UM and NUS remain the leading lights — shaping minds,
shaping trust, and shaping the future. And let us together, carry this torch of hope
with courage, foresight, and unity.
Thank you, and may the bonds between UM and NUS continue to inspire the
generations to come.
