On 13 July 2023, we were shaken with the passing of Dr. Amer Saifude Ghazali who was a lecturer in
the Geography Department, leaving behind his wife and six children. An icon in the field of electoral
geography, Dr Amer was cherished and respected by his peers and students for his humble and
positive personality.

Dr. Amer Saifude was born on 8 August 1970 in Kampung Dewan Beta, Kota Bharu, Kelantan. He
received early education in Sekolah Kebangsaan Dewan Beta (1977-1982) and continued his
secondary education in Sekolah Tengku Muhammad Faris Petra. Following that, he pursued a
bachelor’s degree at FASS’s Geography Department (1990-1995) and obtained a master’s in UKM
and later his PhD again at UM.

He was known for his writing in Geografi Pilihan Raya di Malaysia, a monumental piece of
scholarship for scholars in electoral Geography. He was also an expert on issues surrounding the
politics of the homeland, particularly in Kelantan.

Dr. Amer Saifude was once appointed as the Head of UMcedel, a nationally renowned elections
research centre. He was a usual guest in the media and often commented on the latest

developments of political and electoral issues in the country. We will continue to celebrate and
remember the knowledge he left behind for us and hopes will reward him on the other side.
