Malaysian Chinese Literature is gaining traction in academia, notably with the establishment of
Mahua Literature Centre at Southern University College and the Fang Xiu Special Collection at New
Era University College. Renowned experts like Professors David Wang and Shu-mei Shih have
contributed high-quality research, fostering postgraduate studies in this field. Universiti Malaya,
recognized for its academic excellence, seeks to further elevate Malaysian Chinese Literature by
establishing a dedicated research centre. This centre aims not only to enhance academic resources
but also to foster connections with other Chinese literary regions, transcending national borders. It
aspires to explore interconnections between Malaysian Chinese Literature and other local
literatures, facilitating cross-disciplinary studies. Collaborations with foreign institutions,
publication of academic materials, workshops, and international conferences are envisioned,
aiming to attract global interest and participation. The centre also plans to engage the Malaysian
Chinese Writers Association to promote interaction and translation of Malaysian Chinese literary
works abroad, ultimately ensuring a diverse and promising future for Malaysian Chinese Literature.

thai studies research centre

The Thai Studies Program was established through a MoA signed between the Royal Thai Embassy
(RTE) and UM in 2013. Thereafter a Thai Studies Secretariat cum Resource Room has been operating
under the Department of Southeast Asian Studies, FASS, UM. The Thai Studies Room houses Thai
language learning materials and books on Thailand donated by the RTE (KL) and, renowned Thai
historian, Charnvit Kasetsiri of the Thai Social Science Research Foundation. It serves as a resource
and research centre for students and researchers working on Thai Studies from within and outside
the country. The Program focuses on research collaboration, academic exchanges, and networking
among scholars in Thai Studies in Malaysia and Thailand as well as activities that create visibility for
Thai Studies in Malaysia. In 2018, based on research funded by the RTE, the Program organized a
photo exhibition on the Siamese in Malaysia called a Siamese Journey at the Museum Seni Asia, UM.

UMCEDEL research centre

UMCEDEL refers to the "Universiti Malaya Centre for Democracy and Elections" (UMCEDEL). This
center was established to provide lifelong learning opportunities, professional development
courses, and continuing education programs at the Universiti Malaya. UMCEDEL aimed to cater to
individuals seeking to enhance their skills, knowledge, or qualifications outside of traditional
academic degree programs. They offered various short courses, workshops, and training programs
across different disciplines to meet the diverse educational needs of learners.
