           Communication studies

               About The department

The Department of Media and Communication Studies is
Malaysia's top distinguished media and communication
school. UM is ranked as number one in Malaysia, in the field
of Communication & Media Studies according to the QS
World University Rankings 2019. The department which
began in 1976 as UM's Creative and Descriptive Writing
Program, has been preparing graduates for careers in the
media industry for more than four decades. The
department's goal in its early years was to train both aspiring
and practising journalists, as well as creative writers. In 1993,
the programme was eventually upgraded into a Department
in its own right, and renamed as the Department of Media
Studies, which then expanded its course offerings to reflect
the wide range of fields in the media industry of the 1990's.
The department offers two prominent postgraduate
programs to meet diverse professional and academic
interests. The highly sought-after Master of Media Studies
(full coursework) is designed for both recent graduates and
industry professionals, providing comprehensive training in
today's media landscape within a one-year program. On the
other hand, the flagship Master of Arts in Publishing Studies
caters to book enthusiasts, aspiring publishing professionals,
and industry experts. This program covers a wide range of
topics, including appreciating literary works and
implementing cutting-edge technology in the publishing
industry. Starting in 2022, it will introduce a revamped
           curriculum emphasizing 21st-century publishing demands,
focusing on transmedia and multidisciplinary concepts.
