About The department
The University of Malaya’s Institute of China Studies (ICS),
established in 2003 under the initiative of the former Prime
Minister Abdullah Badawi, is Malaysia’s pioneering research
institute solely dedicated to the studies of contemporary
China and the greater China area, including Hong Kong,
Macao, and Taiwan. ICS envisions becoming the foremost
China-focused research institute in Malaysia and Southeast
Asia, dedicated to the production and advancement of timely
and relevant scholarship and knowledge pertaining to
different facets of contemporary China and their regional and
global impacts, with a uniquely Malaysia’s perspective.
ICS is a diverse and interdisciplinary hub, drawing from the
fields of political economy, international relations, social
development and cultural studies. It focuses on
understanding the dynamics, processes, and implications of
China’s reforms and its integration with the global political
economy, particularly in the context of China’s interactions
with the Southeast Asian region and Malaysia. ICS aims to
provide policy input to both government and non-
governmental sectors, facilitate informed discussion on
China among the public, and serves as an important bridge
for networking and collaboration among scholars and
practitioners regionally and globally. To that end, it regularly
conducts seminars, conferences, policy consultations, and
research projects, and publishes two academic journals:
International Journal of China Studies and 当 代 中 国 研 究 期 刊
(Contemporary China Studies). Its resource centre also
contains one of the best collections on contemporary China
in Malaysia.
