Prospects
For the upcoming year, UM Plantations
will continue to focus on the following
strategies to drive performance.
One, maximising potential yields
through the use of sustainable
fertiliser inputs.
Two, minimising cost by deploying
its own estate workers instead of
contracting work out and transitioning
to semi and fully mechanised spraying
works and fertiliser applications
to reduce manual labour needs
once suitable equipment has been
purchased.
Three, enhancing technology adoption
by implementing a well-planned
and integrated mechanisation
system during replanting for greater
automation and reduced dependency
on manual labour. Some initiatives
under consideration are to mechanise
the LF collector, spraying pump,
fertiliser spreader and mini-tractor
grabber.
To overcome dependency on a single
crop, UM Plantations will expand its
landbank and shift its focus to the
multi-crop business. Beginning in
2022, UM Plantations will utilise UM’s
land in Gemas, Negeri Sembilan to
further cultivate oil palm. Meanwhile,
the Johor estate will commence its
replanting activities in 2023. Another
estate in Jelebu has been earmarked
for development of coconut, bamboo
and farming activities.
