International Masters in ASEAN Studies (IMAS)

The International Masters in ASEAN Studies (IMAS) programme provides an advanced
level of understanding of the political-security, economic, social, and cultural forces
which shape ASEAN as well as the policy processes in a range of areas. The aims of the
programme include the following: (1) To offer an analysis of the historical, social and
cultural forces that have shaped Southeast Asia as a macro-region in the world order, (2)
To consider the contested nature of theoretical concepts – how the same basic
categories are understood in partially different ways in competing theoretical
approaches to regionalism and regionalisation, and how some concepts belong more to
some theories than the other, (3) To assess the institutional arrangements, changing
policy agenda and governance issue of ASEAN in the contemporary period, (4) To
compare the key characteristics of ASEAN with analogous developments in regional
associations elsewhere in the world.

Learning Outcome

 Mastery of knowledge, concept and theory of ASEAN studies.
 Apply the techniques and skills gained from the courses on ASEAN studies.
 Utilise knowledge and skills in ASEAN Studies for the benefits of society.
 Practice of ethical values and professionalism in career and social interaction.
 Effective communication through verbal or writing, ability to work as team and
demonstrate leadership qualities.
 Conduct research to solve problems in making decisions to address issues related
to ASEAN.
 Manage relevant information, knowledge and skills in the field of ASEAN Studies
for lifelong learning.
 Use management skills to provide business or entrepreneurial plans.
