PBGS 6342            RESEARCH IN LITERACY DEVELOPMENT                                                    3 CREDITS


            Synopsis

                   The course provides an overview of literacy development throughout the lifespan.  It examines literacy
            development as a linguistic, cognitive and sociocultural process in a variety of contexts, including home, school
            and the workplace. Topics covered include: definitions of literacy, reading and writing development, theories and
            models of reading and writing, literacy instruction and literacy assessment; multiliteracies, critical literacies and
            emergent literacies.

            Assesment  Method    : Continuous Assessment (Test, Assignment, Presentation): 70%,
                                            Examination : 30%

            Synopsis

                   The aim of the course is to provide a comprehensive understanding of the use of text and discourse
            analytical approaches  and  methods in educational  settings.    Topics  covered  include  conversational  analysis,
            interactional sociolinguistics, genre analysis, ethnography of communication and critical discourse analysis.  The
            course  will also  focus on  texts and  discourses  in  the  home,  the  classroom  and  the  workplace, and  explore
            implications for teaching and learning language.

            Assesment  Method    : Continuous Assessment (Test, Assignment, Presentation): 70%
                                            Examination : 30%
