Students Dialogue Session
with Deputy Dean
(Undergraduate)
by Dr. Koh You Beng & Dr. Yap Seong Ling
Q (Students): What is it meant by a holistic graduate?
A (Associate Professor Dr Rosli Ramli): A holistic
graduate is one who excel academically as well
as possess qualities in all aspects that help in
personal development. For example, some students
with a CGPA of 4.0 are unable to speak in public,
while some with excellent soft skills but hardly score
above 3.0. Neither of these is our target of holistic
graduate. We would like to produce students with
good academic achievement and soft skills that will
enable them to have a bright future career
advancement. This aim is ambitious, but I believe
even if we couldn’t hit the target now, at least
something can be achieved and we will be
improving all the time.
Q (Students): What are the approaches taken by the faculty to produce holistic graduate ?
A (Associate Professor Dr Rosli Ramli): University Malaya has the established track record of
producing academically good graduates, and is now refining the methods in soft skill enhancement
and assessments to produce holistic graduates. The iCGPA (Integrated Cumulative Grade Point
Average) has been introduced as an integrated mechanism for assessing and reporting students’
development and performance as well as learning gains in ethics, knowledge and abilities. At the
same time, train the trainer programs will be implemented to enhance the soft skill of the lecturers,
as they playa pivotal role in guiding and assessing students’ soft skills.
