Department of Geography
The Department of Geography, University of Malaya was established in Lembah Pantai in 1959. Sixty-two years since its establishment,
the Department of Geography continues to improve the quality of its education for producing human capital with skills and expertise in the
field of sub-certain specialisations including geographical aspects. The development of geography began as an academic subject at the
higher education level in 1928 at Raffles College, Singapore, which was then known as Tanah Malaya. Twentyone years later, it achieved
university status by the name Universiti Malaya, which was established in 1949, also in Singapore. After the independence of the Federation
of Malaya in 1957, a campus was established in an area with a beautiful topography in Lembah Pantai located in the western part of Kuala
Lumpur two years later. At that time, the Department of Geography was created with five academic staff and one general staff. Today, the
Department of Geography has grown by offering programs for the Bachelor's Degree in Geography as well as Master of Arts (MA) and
Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) degrees. At the Bachelor's Degree and Higher Degree level, students have the opportunity to study various
subspecialisation fields that include Social Geography, Physical Geography, Urban Geography, Political Geography, Economic Geography,
Transport Geography, Natural Disaster Geography, Biogeography, Geographical Information Systems, Remote Sensing and other courses
related to the discipline of Geography. On top of that, students also have the flexibility to develop geographical knowledge with other
disciplines through collaboration programs provided at the University of Malaya.
In addition, the application of new curriculum values in the study program in the Department of Geography, which is evaluated every five
years, can ensure continuous quality improvement and relevance to market needs and current conditions. For instance, students are
exposed to the use of new technology in education and research, industrial training and student exchange programs to increase added
market value and competitive spirit among them to enter the world of work. conducting research both at home and abroad.
In terms of academic staff in the Department of Geography, it comprises lecturers with expertise in their respective fields based on the
programs offered in line with the Quality Policy of the University of Malaya. They are also very active in conducting research both at home
and abroad. Also fueling the enthusiasm of the department's members is a distinguished alumnus from the Department of Geography,
