(5) Candidate is not allowed to withdraw from any semester in any of the
following situations:

(a) Candidate has not attended at least one semester of study;
(b) When the examination period has commenced; or
(c) During the final semester of candidature.

Lapse in Candidature

A candidate, whose has been lapsed due to failure to renew the candidature, may
submit an appeal to continue his/her studies. However, it is only apply for
candidate who had lapse for not more than two (2) semesters consecutively and
still in the maximum period of study. Penalty RM300.00 will be imposed in order
to reactivate the candidature.

A candidate who failed to register for three (3) semesters consecutively will be
terminated and his/her name will be removed from the list of UM postgraduate
candidate.

Change of Title/Field of Research

A candidate may change his/her title or field of research at any time during
his/her candidature by submitting application in accordance with the prescribed
procedures to the Faculty. However, the title or field of research will be finalized
and approved by the Faculty meeting before the candidate submits his/her thesis
or dissertation for examination.

Change of Supervisor/Department

A candidate may change his/her supervisor(s) or department by submitting
application in accordance with the prescribed procedures. However, any changes
will be finalized and subject to the approval of the Faculty concerned.

Extension of Period of Candidature

A candidate may appeal to extend the maximum period of candidature in his/her
final semester before the end of the candidature period. Appeal need to be done
by filling the appropriate form obtainable from the IGS website.

Candidate who is following research programmes is required to get support from
the supervisor(s) and candidate who is following coursework programmes is
required to get support from the Deputy Dean of Higher Degree before
submitting the form for recommendation of the Dean of the Faculty and the Dean
of the Institute of Graduate Studies (IGS).

Approval for one semester extension can be given twice. No more appeal after an
extension of two semesters has been granted.
