Why did you choose this programme?
I was drawn to pursue Bachelor of Applied Geology because
I knew I wanted to study something related to the
environment with a little interest in engineering sciences.
After going to one of the study fairs, one of the lecturers
easily convinced me by telling one of his successful career
life stories involving the mining and geological industry in
Malaysia, inspiring me to enrol in this program. At first, I did
not have a grand plan detailing every decision about my
future career. However, after my second year of studies, I
gained a clearer vision of my career path.
The structure of this program lets you venture into a different type of field. We are exposed from the
very fundamentals of geology to each specific field, including structural geology, petroleum geology,
geochemistry, geospatial modelling using gis, etc. These allowed me to venture into a wider career field
and land my dream job.
One of the best things about this program was the interaction between theoretical and practical work.
After fundamental theoretical classes, the lecturers will let us do practical work, including field trips and
testing. This helps us to understand one process in a broader context. In the field, students have the
opportunity to learn from nature which provides a setting for discussion and allows the application of
concepts. Besides that, the department also frequently organized talks or workshops from industry
experts to give exposure and share their expertise in the geological field.
If I could choose, one thing I really like about this program is the thrill of doing fieldwork with the other
classmate. Not only did these field trips take me to places I'd have never been before, but they were an
enjoyable and memorable way to learn alongside staff and classmates. Besides, through this program, I
could enhance my soft skill by organizing an annual geological department program that involves other
Geology students in Asia, the 'Geology Industrial Week'. I have thoroughly enjoyed my degree so far. The
friendships that grow during your degree, particularly during fieldwork, will last beyond your degree.
Furthermore, the lecturers are always on their tallest tip-toe to help and guide us. Even after finishing
my degree, they stay connected and guide us as fresh graduates.
