Why did you choose this programme?
Ever since I was a child, I always found the limestone
formation along Gua Musang's highway amusing. I found the
journey back to my hometown in Kelantan to be full of
mysterious worlds waiting for me to discover. My curiosity
and fascination with landscapes, particularly mountains, are
what ignited my interest in learning more about rock
formation. As someone who enjoys outdoor activities, I
would also like to find a career pathway that fits my
interests. Therefore, this programme suits me best. One of
the interesting points of this programme is that it offers a
wide range of career options. The modules exposed students
to numerous sub-disciplines such as oil and gas, mining and
economic geology, engineering geology, environmental
geology, and even Geographic Information System (GIS).
Along the way, I realized that I enjoyed geological exploration and geophysics. I am fortunate to
travel as part of the exploration team studying rare earth elements, which also necessitates
geophysics as one of the processes involved in this project.
Regarding my career, GIS was one of the most important skills I learned in this programme. It has
evolved into a modelling and display interface and a cloud database for the site. Skills gained from
the fieldwork and lab work also prepare students to become more adaptable to change and
challenges. I firmly believe the Applied Geology programme at Universiti Malaya provides different
skill sets that will enable students to pursue better career opportunities.
I would say the fieldwork course is the highlight of this program. Not only it equipped me with skills
and knowledge, but it also strengthened my relationship with peers and lecturers. Through this
learning activity, I witnessed how committed and passionate the lecturers were about their
research interests. In addition, completing fieldwork with my peers in places with amazing
geological landscapes was rewarding. Even though the field trip was tiring, it is one of the fondest
memory of my undergraduate years.
Working as a geologist now, I found that the experience and knowledge I received during my
undergraduate years made me appreciate my surroundings more. Whenever I encounter rock
formations on the highway, while hiking or even in my backyard, I could always relate to what I
learned through this programme. This perspective often enables us to see problems differently than
others.
