Oil Palm Seed Producer Operation Executive
Why did you choose this programme?
I have been interested in biotechnology since high
school years. Stemming from a science expo in which
I saw plant tissue culture. Having a plant growing from
other than seeds fascinated me as a teenager and
anything grown in the lab such as organs, meat, and so
on..
Growing food from lab excites me as the film Snowpiercer showed how humanity survives in
scarcity and a controlled environment can grow food and maintain a lifestyle.
Thus, I strive to pursue biotechnology as it was kind of a popular during that time. We
were encouraged to pursue hard sciences which supposedly would give us a better career
opportunities. Biotech is a diverse field which includes living organisms for the betterment
of human society including food security, environmental issues and pharmaceutical area
in which provides large and vast career opportunities too!
I secured my current job through a scholarship program by FGV Holdings Berhad. The
process of selection included several interviews sessions by levels and exams. FGV
Holdings is a large group with several subsidiaries, and I am currently working in one of the
divisions/companies, FGV Agri Services Sdn Bhd located in Pusat Penyelidikan Pertanian
Tun Razak, Pahang as the Oil Palm Seed Producer Operation Executive. Through my
knowledge in biotech (esp plant biotech) I am able to grasp my work scope faster and use
them efficiently.
Biotech program is one of the broad courses in which you can divert into many majors such
as animal biotech, plant biotech, genetic engineering, biomolecular, bioprocess etc. The
best thing about it is you can opt to learn which courses you want to while having the
principal understanding of biotechnology. This also can be the stepping stone for students
who are interested in becoming an academic, research scientist, and environmentalist to
pursue a postgraduate programme. You can either choose to work on-site jobs such as
agriculturist, agronomist and technician or you can also work in labs as
a research associate, facility manager, microbiologist and many more.
So many opportunities and field visits to be expected from this course. Apart from lab work
and lectures, students are encouraged to be involved in outdoor programs and activities.
