INDUSTRY FEATURE
A geologist's visions for a sustainable future
At CGG, we combine human ingenuity, data, and new technology to understand and solve the world’s natural resource,
environmental and infrastructure challenges for a more sustainable future.
With a rich history spanning 90 years, CGG started on this journey the field of geophysical acquisition in 1931, leading up to
becoming one of the most respected geoscience companies in the world and playing an essential role in introducing major
technological advances – not only in seismic acquisition but also in geophysical signal processing and reservoir
characterization.
In 2014, CGG acquired Fugro Geoscience, expanding its offering to cover all aspects of geoscientific studies from regional
to borehole geology and satellite mapping.
At the core of our values is the urge to have a high performing culture passionate about solving complex problems. These
problems cannot be solved in the right context unless we have a strong understanding of the geology of a particular area.
This leads us to be complete geoscientists, who are scientists at heart with training in geology.
About me?
I am a geologist by qualification, but I have been working as a geophysicist for more than 16 years now. I studied Geology
for my B.Sc (Hons) degree from Hans Raj College, Delhi University, one of the oldest universities in India and the alma mater
of many famous Indians.
After my bachelor’s degree, I pursued M.Sc. in Applied
Geology from the Indian Institute of Technology – Bombay,
which has been one of the premier technical institutes in
India for many decades and is currently the highest-ranked
institute in India.
In 2005, when I started with CGG, I was the only geologist
in CGG India and had to work hard to appreciate the
technical aspects of geophysics. It has been an exciting ride
and still wakes me up every day with the passion for solving
a new challenge or learning a new technology. However, I
probably would not have been able to appreciate my work
without my training as a geologist – just as a painting
becomes more powerful in the right frame and under the
right light.
I wish to see more geologists developing their passion in
core sciences like Mathematics and Physics and then
contributing to the industry as geologists and as complete
geoscientists.
