                 Course Learning                At the end of this course, students are able to:
                 Outcomes*                      (1) identify strategies and policy alternatives as input to
                                                    decision-making  in  the  overall  ASEAN  socio-cultural
                                                    cooperation sector. (C1)
                                                (2) explain the dynamics and challenges of regional socio-
                                                    cultural  cooperation  in  ASEAN  and  international
                                                    cooperation  between  ASEAN  and  its  Dialogues
                                                    Partners and other organisations. (C2)
                                                (3) analyse  the  impact  and  usefulness  of  socio-cultural
                                                    cooperation  as  a  mechanism  to  position  the  ASEAN
                                                    Socio-Cultural  Community  as  a  pillar  of  the  ASEAN
                                                    Community. (C4)

                 Synopsis of Course             This  course  provides  an  introduction  to  the  study  of
                 Contents                       societies from the angle of socio-cultural issues that bear
                                                upon  identities.  It  provides  a  basis  of  the  internal
                                                structure  of  the  ASEAN  and  examines  communication
                                                and  languages,  the  media,  identity,  the  labour  market,
                                                education, equality of gender, etc. within the context of
                                                regional  integration  and  global  challenges.  While  the
                                                focus is on issues of today, it provides enough historical
                                                background  for  a  deeper  understanding  of  ASEAN
                                                regional  cooperation  in  the  socio-cultural  sector  which
                                                forms one of the pillars of the ASEAN Community.
