Synopsis of Course The course provides an interdisciplinary examination of
Contents historical transformation, social change and cultural
patterns of modern Southeast Asia. The aim is to provide
a foundation for students to understand the conditions
that gave birth to ASEAN in 1967. It offers an insight into
the ways in which national and regional dynamics have
interacted in shaping a unique pattern of regional
integration. A key focus is on the efforts of Southeast
Asians to shape their own destinies and establish their
roles in the world. The course covers the period mainly
from the end of the Pacific War in 1945 and examines in

frontiers that the independent states inherit, rise of
nationalism and resistance to colonial authority, and the
birth of post-colonial states in the context of the Cold
War. Examples/cases given are within Asia-Europe
