               Course Learning Outcomes*         At the end of this course, students are able to:
                                                  (1) interpret  an  understanding  of  the  changing
                                                     economic  policy  of  the  European  Union  (EU)  since
                                                     the  establishment  of  the  European  Coal  and  Steel
                                                     Community in 1950. (C5)
                                                  (2) develop  knowledge  of  economic  cooperation  and
                                                     integration in the European Union (EU) including  its
                                                     various mechanisms and frameworks. (P5)
                                                  (3) analyse the evolution, achievements and challenges
                                                     of  the  European  Union  (EU)  economic  community.

               Synopsis of Course Contents       This  course  provides  the  rationale  of  EU  economic
                                                 integration and an in-depth assessment of the evolving
                                                 economic  issues  in  EU  Economic  Cooperation  and
                                                 Integration  since  the  establishment  of  the  European
                                                 Coal  and  Steel  Community  in  1950,  precursor  to  the
                                                 European  Economic  Community  (EEC),  the  European
                                                 Community  (EC)  and  the  EU.  It  covers  a  range  of
                                                 economic issues of and the challenges faced by the EU,
                                                 focusing  on  the  evolution  of  regional  economic
                                                 cooperation, leading to the present situation, including
                                                 the  EU  single  market,  the  Economic  and  Monetary
                                                 Union (EMU) and the community budget. It starts with a
                                                 critical  evaluation  of  early  economic  cooperation
                                                 efforts,  and  analyses  the  factors  leading  to  the
                                                 establishment  of  various  agreements  in  the  economic
                                                 sector. The course concludes by assessing the future of
                                                 economic cooperation and integration in the EU.
