FOREWORD
by the dean
The Faculty of Arts and Social Sciences has a robust research culture. It has one full-fledged research
Institute on China and six research centres with specific focus. These centres also promote inter-
disciplinary research involving colleagues from other faculties and beyond the boundaries of the
University. Apart from that there are smaller initiatives aimed at bringing colleagues together in
research groups and networks to work on topics of common interests. Many of these initiatives also
transcend the Humanities-Social Sciences and Science and Technology divide. All these have
resulted in an active publication track record that has expanded in quality and quantity.
In the coming years, the Faculty hopes to see an upward trajectory in research capacity as well as an
expansion of research scope and activities into new areas that will help to provide solutions to some
of the challenges that are faced by the nation, as well as humanity at large. It is also the hope of the
Faculty to expand our network and linkages with both our existing partners and collaborators as well
as forging new partnerships and new linkages.
As a Research University, Universiti Malaya places great emphasis on building and expanding
collaborative initiatives. And one of the best ways is to encourage people-to-people ties between
scholars. This Researcher Profile Book will provide leads to friends and colleagues from outside of the
Faculty and Universiti Malaya to search and identify potential collaborators from within and abroad.
I would like to congratulate Associate Professor Dr Helena Varkkey and her team at the Research
Management Unit for their continuous efforts in promoting research, including the compilation of
this Researcher Profile Book. It is the hope of the Faculty that this Researcher Profile Book will help in
further enhancing research and discovery at the Faculty.
