            Synopsis:

This course will introduce students to some basic notions about the nature and functions of language. Students will be
exposed to theoretical assumptions of language and their implication for teaching and learning of English as a Second
Language. The main components of linguistics include phonology, morphology, syntax semantics and pragmatics and their
contributions to the formulation of pedagogic principles. Students should be able to evaluate issues regarding English
