Their journey continued to a remarkable
man-made forest oasis nestled amidst the
desert sands—a testament to human
ingenuity and environmental stewardship in
the face of the encroaching sand and
desertification. Here,
witnessed first-hand the transformative
power of reforestation efforts in restoring
degraded land and preserving biodiversity
in Inner Mongolia. In a symbolic gesture of
solidarity with conservation
participants engaged in a tree planting
activity, contributing to the ongoing
restoration of Inner Mongolia's natural
landscapes. With each planted tree the
participants had helped to grow and
nurtured too is a hope for a greener, more
sustainable future for the region and its
inhabitants. With that renewed enthusiasm
in heart, ASEP 2014 continued to the next
itinerary of the visit: Chengdu, Sichuan.
On August 8th, ASEP 2014 began in
Chengdu, Sichuan, a city renowned for its
rich history, vibrant
unparalleled culinary delights. The day
began with a deep dive into the ancient
marvel of Dujiangyan, a testament to the
ingenuity of our ancestors in harmonizing
human needs with nature's bounty. Led by
knowledgeable guides, participants delved
into the history and significance of
Dujiangyan's innovative irrigation system,
marveling at its ability to sustainably
manage water resources for over two
millennia. As they wandered through the
labyrinth of canals
participants gained insights into the
profound impact of responsible water
management on agriculture, livelihoods,
and ecological equilibrium. From the
tranquil banks of the Minjiang River to the
towering Mount Yulei, Dujiangyan served as
a poignant reminder of humanity's capacity
to coexist harmoniously with the natural
world. Continuing their exploration of
water-human relationships, participants
journeyed to the Chengdu Research Base
of Giant Panda Breeding in the afternoon,
where they witnessed first-hand the
intersection of conservation efforts, habitat
preservation, and sustainable water
practices. Amidst the verdant bamboo
participants groves, participants encountered giant
pandas, ambassadors of environmental
stewardship, whose survival hinges upon
the delicate balance of water resources
and ecosystem health. Through engaging
efforts, exhibits and educational presentations,
participants learned about the
interconnectedness of water, biodiversity,
and climate resilience, gaining a deeper
appreciation for the critical role that water
plays in supporting diverse ecosystems
and endangered species. As they observed
the pandas' playful antics and serene
contemplations, participants were inspired
to become advocates for water
sustainability and guardians of our planet's
precious resources. As evening descended
upon Chengdu, participants were afforded
culture, and free time to immerse themselves in the
city's vibrant cultural landscape, where the
threads of tradition and modernity
intertwined seamlessly. From the historic
streets of Jinli adorned with traditional
lanterns to the bustling markets of Chunxi
Road alive with the rhythm of daily life,
Chengdu offered a tapestry of experiences
that celebrated the rich heritage of Sichuan
Province. Participants savored the flavors
of Sichuan cuisine, renowned for its bold
spices and culinary artistry while engaging
and spillways, with local artisans and performers who
shared stories of resilience, creativity, and
community. Against the backdrop of
Chengdu's dynamic urban environment,
participants reflected on the intrinsic
connection between water, culture, and
collective identity, recognizing the need for
sustainable practices to safeguard our
shared heritage for future generations. As
the day came to a close, the participants
were reminded again of the day's
experiences with a renewed sense of
