Which year do you participate in ASEP?
ASEP 2019 Cambodia “Sustainable Peacebuilding”
How participation in ASEP changed your perspective on environmental sustainability?
Before joining the ASEAN Student Environment Platform (ASEP), I had a basic
understanding of environmental sustainability: recycling when possible, conserving water,
and so on. But my perspective was somewhat superficial, shaped by what I read in news
articles and saw in documentaries. It wasn't until I participated in ASEP that I began to
grasp the depth and complexity of environmental issues and how interconnected they are
with our daily lives and cultural practices.
In what ways do you believe the project has had a lasting effect on environmental
awareness or future sustainability initiatives?
Reflecting on my experience, I see both immediate and long-term effects from this project:
1. Cross-Border Collaborations: ASEP has fostered collaborations extending beyond the
project’s lifespan. The connections made between students, local leaders, and
environmental organizations across ASEAN countries have laid the groundwork for ongoing
partnerships and joint initiatives.
2. Enhancing Environmental Education: By engaging in hands-on projects and real-world
problem-solving, participants have gained practical knowledge and skills that extend
beyond theoretical learning. This practical approach may inspire many to pursue careers in
environmental fields or become active advocates for sustainability in their own home
countries and beyond.
3. Encouraging Policy Advocacy: ASEP has also had an effect on policy advocacy by
showcasing successful grassroots initiatives and demonstrating the importance of local
and regional environmental strategies. The project's outcomes and recommendations have
informed policy discussions, leading to the adoption of more sustainable practices and
policies.
