TEACHER LIBRARIANSHIP
Globally, teacher librarians, school librarians or library media teachers can be identified
regardless of the different terminologies used. Different terminologies are used for
teacher librarians in different countries and in policy statements by various school
library associations or professional groups. Various professional groups have also
developed policy statements regarding school librarians or teacher librarians in their
regions and localities to suit their interpretation and responsibilities (Tan, 2014).
The International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions (IFLA), the
International Association of School Librarianship (IASL), the American Association of
School Librarian (AASL), the Canadian School Library Association (CSLA) and the
Australian School Library Association (ASLA) have all issued individual policy
statements on school librarians. Most of the policy statements reveal and confirm that
‘school librarians are qualified teachers with additional qualifications in the area of
Library and Information Science.
Therefore, school librarians or teacher librarians are qualified teachers with additional
qualifications such as a certificate, diploma or degree in Librarianship or Teacher
Librarianship. They focus on integrating information technology within the curriculum
and work with teachers to design curriculum and research units (Coish, 2005). Various
universities such as Charles Sturt University (Australia), San Jose State University
(United States) and the University of British Columbia (Canada) offer a master’s degree
in Teacher Librarianship.
The Teacher Librarianship Master’s degree proposal is suitable for graduates with a
bachelor’s degree in Education and Social Science, Library and Information Science,
Management, Computer Science, Information Technology or related fields and who are
either teachers, library media teachers, teacher librarians, school librarians, library

public, private or international schools, school libraries, school resource centres,
