academic libraries and other educational institutions.
This programme provides knowledge, practical skills and specialist knowledge to
prepare them to be skilful, qualified teacher librarians and digital workers to perform as
professional information management leaders. It prepares them to have analytical
thinking to assess, plan, develop and manage school libraries using digital information
and resources. At the same time, this programme provides librarians with the
educational aspects and pedagogical knowledge which ultimately increases their
professional value. Graduates may find career opportunities as teacher librarians,
information professionals, leaders of information services, digital resourcing, e-research
and digital services, or strategic planning in information and education policy and
practices at various educational institutions.
The key focuses of teacher librarianship programmes are the Understanding of Teacher
Librarianship, Management of the School libraries or Resource Centres, Evaluation and
Organising Education Resources, Cataloguing and Classification, Information
Professionals, Information Retrieval System Design, Information Services, Online
Learning: Tools and Strategies for Success, Organization of Learning Resources and
Design and Implementation of Instructional Strategies for Teacher Librarians, etc.
This programme offers opportunities to library media teachers, librarians, knowledge
workers or information professionals who want to work in school libraries or school
resource centres. It also provides a good ready business market for open and distance
learning institutions throughout the country. With these localities, the open and distance
learning institutions which have learning centres throughout the country will be able to
offer the programme to library media teachers from more than 10,208 (Ministry of
Education, 2019) public schools, MRSM Boarding schools, private and international
schools and other educational institutions in Malaysia.
At the same time, open and distance learning institutions offer a flexible learning
environment, credit transfers, learning opportunities and flexibility for adult learners
where working experience are taken into consideration. The establishment may also
offer learning opportunities from learning centres throughout the country which
provides a good choice of learning location for teachers in Malaysia. The programme
serves the institution’s strategic direction if any open and distance learning institutions
are willing to commit to offer undergraduate, professional and graduate programmes of
a high standard and comparable to the best obtainable anywhere in the nation.
Thus, this programme may be established with an External Advisory Board comprising
