Leading with Purpose
Messages of the Vice Chancellor MESSAGES OF THE VICE CHANCELLOR
people and the fate of the world. As Abraham Lincoln put it: “Nearly all men can
withstand adversity. If you want to test a man’s character, give him power.”
18. It falls upon the collective will and best of humanity to restore the values long
ingrained within us - correcting wrongs, reconnecting values and liberating the
mind. The next phase of mankind’s progression must continue to be anchored
upon the unshakeable foundation of inner values, resolve and the unifying human
spirit.
19. It requires equal courage, determination, strength, perseverance and collective
will to overcome the greatest challenge to humanity in modern history.
20. Moralistic education anchored on the strength of our conscience and humanistic
essence, acts as a custodian of our conviction and intent.
21. It is incumbent upon us in creating a turning point in history - creating openings for
a different world where alliances are forged, kindness harnessed, friendships built,
love for humanity and nature strengthened, respect and appreciation deepened,
conflicts avoided, peace pursued and compassion dignified.
22. The beauty and virtue of the human mind and spirit continue to bring out the
best in people - to make a difference in the lives of others and give meaning and
purpose to life on Earth.
23. From doctors risking their lives, to virologists working tirelessly toward a vaccine,
to farmers and delivery workers ensuring food security and supply chain - all
reaffirm the enduring strength and hope of the human spirit, and this must be
continuously reflected in our core purpose and drive here in Universiti Malaya.
24. A year of greater purpose, deeper resilience, bold progress and shared
achievements will be in our reckoning. A year where our unity will continue to
108 strengthen our mission, and where our diversity remains our greatest source of
strength and inspiration.
25. As we move forward, we do so with clarity and conviction that we will:
• Dream bigger.
• Strengthen excellence and impact.
• Empower our students and staff.
• Carry Malaysia’s name with dignity on the global stage.
• Create a better tomorrow for humanity.
26. The world will not wait - and UM will not stand still. With a consolidated will for a
brighter future, the road ahead must not be captive to the past.
27. This is a period of reckoning - and the best opportunity for us to create our mark,
leave a legacy worth remembering, right wrongs, share values, extend kindness,
and be there for the vulnerable.
28. The beauty of mankind will always ensure that there is a better tomorrow, shaped
by us here in Universiti Malaya.
